Very few animated franchises hold as special a place in people’s hearts as the Kung Fu Panda series. The first instalment dropped back in 2008, and we were introduced to our protagonist, Po (a charming, hilarious, and clumsy panda who is destined to become the Dragon Warrior and save his world). Every film in the series extends Po’s journey, explores his increasingly impressive kung-fu skills alongside his friends and masters, and delves into what his destiny really means. Needless to say with the announcement of Kung Fu Panda 4 fans are excited to see how the story of Po continues.
The Journey So Far
The first three Kung Fu Panda movies formed a cohesive trilogy of sorts. The first film, released in 2008, introduced us to the bumbling Po, a panda who is deemed the Dragon Warrior despite his lack of martial arts skills. With the help of Master Shifu and the Furious Five (Tigress, Viper, Crane, Monkey, and Mantis), he learns to rise to his destiny. The second movie took a deep dive into Po’s past: It explained how he came to be adopted by his noodle-making goose father, Mr. Ping, and it took on the question of what happened to Po’s biological family with much more gravitas than anyone expected from an animated sequel. Here was where Po also began his search for inner peace. In movie No. 3, we watched as Po discovered chi (it’s kind of like The Matrix) and reunited with his fellow pandas while battling against an evil spirit warrior named Kai.
Each film in the trilogy got better and better as a whole, continuing the story and adding more humor, action, and heart. The perfect mix of Eastern philosophy and Western storytelling made an overall tone unlike any other that could be appreciated by kids and adults alike. DreamWorks Animation hit it big with this franchise both financially, critically, and it’s now one of their most recognizable and biggest series ever.
What to Expect in Kung Fu Panda 4
With Kung Fu Panda 4 officially announced, fans are questioning what the next installment will entail. Of course, the studio has remained tight-lipped about where the story’s going, but a few theories have cropped up based on the trajectory of the other movies.
- Po’s Evolution as a Leader: By the end of the third film, Po had fully embraced his role as the Dragon Warrior and accepted new responsibilities. It’s likely we will see how Po is dealing with being a teacher and a leader in Kung Fu Panda 4. Maybe he will be guiding new warriors or perhaps Po will face some kind of a challenge that really puts his newly acquired leadership skills to the test. Maybe some more panda characters will be added to the franchise and we’ll get to see more about Po’s relationship with his biological father who finally re-entered his life.
